If all Americans didnt buy gas for 1 week could we hurt the oil companies?

No, not in the least. Oil companies would probably do better not to sell in America at all. At least then they would not have to answer dumb questions to a dumber congressman. If all Americans didnt buy gas for 1 week could we hurt the oil companies?
Sigh...no...those ';gas boycotts'; don't work.

Sure, everybody fills up on Sunday, and the oil companies don't get any money on a Monday. But then, all the money is made back when everybody has to fill up on Tuesday or Wednesday.

The only way to make a difference is to cut driving to an absolute minimum. No unnecessary trips.

The economy won't be destroyed by something like that either. Like I said, you're not holding back anything from the oil companies. You're just delaying payment for a day or 2.

Vote Democrat to make a real difference in gas prices.

Oh for the days when the only thing we worried about was the latest about Monica Lewinsky...gas was certainly more affordable back then.If all Americans didnt buy gas for 1 week could we hurt the oil companies?
No. Oil Companies don't care.

The Profits of Oil Companies are a lower percentage than Starbucks Coffee.
BEAUTIFUL QUESTION. a diamond in the rough. let's examine this... if AMERICANS refused to be gas for one week what would it do? Whoever asked this question is a thinker and deserves kudos.

what would it do. well, my friend, the gas companies and the oil companies would be....*****. that one day would cost them millions, since America drinks gasoline like water. we use 24 percent more than the rest of the world.... amazing, isn't it? it's those good ole american made cars.

has anyone thought.........that the previous years when we entered this war that suv's were such a hot item and were sold like hotcakes?

good old gas burning fuel inefficent suv's.

why in the WORLD did our country push those gashogs off on the public when they KNEW the oil crisis would put us to the crunch????

seems like a coup to me.

one week without gas from every single american would make uncle sam ***** in his pants and believe me, the arab world as well. they need our american dollars as much as we ';need'; that black gold, texas tea.

this is such a wonderful question but asker..........no one will do it. but i challenge everyone. i would. i would not buy gas for a week if we could get 100 listeners to do the same. i mean that. i will walk to work, rain or snow or in my case extreme heat, if i could get 100 to do the same.

what this question is breaching on and fails to ask is this: can americans take the oil crisis by the tail and turn things around with the Right of Purchase? and the answer is yes. but it costs. Americans would have to learn to ride their bikes like the chinese do, or learn to do without that SUV that promises to drive up the side of a mountain which no SUV has ever done since the history of the world or since the power of gravity was discovered.

think about this, questioner. you are so bright!!! what if every american TURNED OFF THE TELEVISION AND TALKED TO THEIR FAMILY FOR 3 NIGHTS A WEEK??????????/ what would THAT do? sales in clothing, soap, and so many things would drop through the floor because out of every half hour show you watch you get.....................10 MINUTES OF COMMERCIALS telling you how to look, what to eat and what to drive.

**** them!!!!!!!!!!!!!

this is a GREAT QUESTION that opens the door to many more. what if we actually became freedom loving patriots like americans are, and did the right thing because it was RIGHT, and wore the clothes we needed to BECAUSE THEY AIDED OUR WORKLOAD (Hence Levi's Jeans..... I am a midwestern girl and our jeans were built for hard farmwork and not to show off our damned ***-- and those jeans were torture until they were ';broken in'; like...6 weeks later.... and nothing, not corn stalks or pollen or snake could penetrate that unbelieveably stiff jean material)---and did the American job of well, living within our means??-- we'd win this damned war. We can win this war from home, people. We don't need a damned stealth bomber that costs a bazillion dollars and we don't need more military deployment. WE NEED AMERICANS!!!!! hard working, hearty, dependable and damed indestructable americans saying HELL NO we will not pay five dollars a gallon in gas!!!!!!!

THAT WOULD win the war. I just don't know if there are that many Americans left. Our relatives..........Earlhy americans.........were the hearty, thrifty kind that could fight off the british, the storms AND the american heat and humidity with crying much. our genes are more than hearty.........we are killers. anyone who is a second or third generation american is the best of the best. why is this happening????

this questioner asks if we can hurt the oil companies. hell yes we can hurt them!!!!!!!!! we can crush them to powder given 3 WEEKS if we all worked as americans together.

if we could get 100 people to say yes, hell, i will walk to my job at the hospital and won't buy a drop of gas. can we hurt them? hell we can own them in a few freaking weeks. we are americans!!!!!!!!!!!!! our fathers took a whole nation out of the mouth of king george the third who would have just raped the hell out of it. we can do it i am saying we CAN DO IT!!!!!!!!!1
No because our economy revolves around people using oil and getting from place A to B. Do u know how many businesses rely on the use of oil. The real way to take a stand is to start drilling oil in our own country. There are billions of gallons of oil under this country. The democrats just won't allow it. I also think we should continue to keep experimenting with new and alternative fuel sources, and find our own ways to power our vehicles.
no

they would just take a week off for vacation

then back to business as usual
i've also been wondering that, too bad it probably will never happen
No. What most Americans don't understand is that this is the way terrorist-supporting and radical Muslim countries are getting back at the US. They can't defeat us militarily so the are going to defeat us financially.
somebody had idea of boycotting one company at a time. I thought that was interesting idea and it might work.
Yes and totally collapse the world economy at the same time.
No. We'd only hurt the gas station owners who have bills to pay with a boycott like that.

But this really isn't about 'us vs. the oil companies.' It's about Americans needing to reign in our huge consumption of fuel. Americans have had cheap gas at the pump for decades (although we've paid for it through our taxes--oil companies have been subsidized by the US gov't for decades, for oil exploration, etc).

It's time to cut down our overall use. And time to expect a higher tax on gasoline so that we can start repairing our higways and paying off our national debt! Do you know that back when gas was only 25 cents a gallon the tax was 18 cents? Now that it's $3.79/gallon in NJ, the tax is STILL only 18 cents/gallon!
First of all, you'd never get enough people to go along with such a boycott, so it wouldn't have any lasting impact.

Secondly, as long as Americans are 'hooked' on OIL, the OIL companies will continue to rake in the profits with all the industry's price-fixing, market manipulation and price-gouging. Face it: two former OILmen in the White House are elated over OIL industry profits. That's why they were 'selected' to be installed in the Oval Office.

Let's assume you earn $12.00 per hour and work twenty hours overtime each week. Your gross pay is $480.00 plus $360.00 for the overtime pay. If you have to fill up twice a week at $100 per fill-up (not unusual with an SUV or one of those monstrous pick-up trucks), you're spending $200 a week - or 55% of your overtime pay - just to drive back and forth to work!! That means more than 11 hours of your overtime pay goes for gas just you can drive back and forth to work!!

The only way to 'hurt' the OIL companies is to eliminate our dependence on OIL. That means driving more fuel-efficient cars; using more mass transportation; creating alternative energy sources; riding bicycles or mopeds instead of cars, and even WALKING to school to work, or to the store!! I predict that once the cost of gasoline exceeds $5.00 per gallon, you'll see employees actually calling in to say, ';I can't come to work today. I can't afford to drive my car!';

Supposedly, the OIL companies' own surveys reveal that people won't start screaming unil the cost of gasoline exceeds $5.00 per gallon. So we've got a ways to go until most motorists start parking their cars - permanently. -RKO- 05/26/08
nothing would happen. people will buy double the amount of oil the following week. and it wont really have any effect on the economy either.
sure...right after we f*cked up our entire economy
How would I get to work? Will you pay for a one week vacation?
